There have been 3 Cliff Houses.
(I) was built in 1863, sold to Alphonso Sutro in 1881 and destroyed by fire in 1894.
(II) was built in 1896 and desroyed by fire in 1907.
(III) was built in 1909 and sold in 1952 to George Whitney.
In 1977 the U.S. National Park Service acquired the property and today it is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
