In May 2009 Chef Murphy suffered an invasive group A streptococcus infection after a slip and fall at his home. The infection led to toxic shock syndrome and DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation), a rare, life-threatening condition that prevents blood from clotting normally. Chef Murphy had 19 surgeries and had to be resuscitated three times. After a long, painful recovery, Murphy pulled through and was back at work in December 2009.
