Bar George is named for Sir George Stephen, a prominent Montréal businessman and philanthropist, originally from Scotland. Stephen was the ninth president of the Bank of Montréal and was the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, during which time he was instrumental in obtaining financing for the building of the CPR. Bar George is located in Sir George Stephen's former home in Montréal, which would later operate as the Mount Stephen Club.
