Construction on a convention center to replace the Rivergate meeting facility was carried out from 1981 to May 1984. It was used as an exhibition hall for the 1984 New Orleans World's Fair and in 1985 the New Orleans Convention Center officially opened. A number of expansions and renovations have taken place since 1985 and in 1992 the center was re-named the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. (See The Times Picayune)
