Following the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the Archdiocese of The Cathedral of Saint Vibiana concluded that the structure sustained irreparable damage and would need to be replaced. The Cathedral was decommissioned and a new cathedral, Our Lady of the Angels, was built a few blocks away. In 1999 the building was acquired by developers with the intention to transform the structure into a special event facility known as Vibiana. (See Vibiana History).
