Louis Berckmans was a Belgian medical doctor specializing in horticulture and plant biology. He moved to the United States in 1851 and established nurseries in New Jersey and Augusta, Georgia.
In 1931 golfer Bobby Jones purchased the former property of Fruitland Nurseries, founded by Louis Berckmans, and built Augusta National Golf Club.
