  • Louis Berckmans was a Belgian medical doctor specializing in horticulture and plant biology. He moved to the United States in 1851 and established nurseries in New Jersey and Augusta, Georgia.
  • In 1931 golfer Bobby Jones purchased the former property of Fruitland Nurseries, founded by Louis Berckmans, and built Augusta National Golf Club.
