The original Pickle Barrel opened at 5863 Leslie Street in 1971. In 2021 there were 13 corporate-owned Pickle Barrel locations in Ontario.
In October 2017 the Pickle Barrel outlets were sold to Cara Operations (now Recipe Unlimited Corporation).
In October 2020 the Atrium location at Yonge and Dundas in Toronto closed permanently due to the impact of COVID-19. This location had been operating since 1981 and was the restaurant's flagship location.
In February 2024 the original Pickle Barrel on Leslie closed ( Streets of Toronto )
